By the end of Q3 2026, global venture capital investment reached $698.3 billion, above the $484.1 billion recorded in 2025 and the previous record of $520.2 billion set in 2022, according to CB Insights. The total masked a shrinking deal count: investors closed 6,913 rounds in the quarter, the lowest number since 2022. Late-stage, large rounds accounted for much of the total, with 299 mega-rounds of at least $100 million raising $149.2 billion, or about 80% of all capital deployed.
The surge in large rounds was especially visible in AI. CB Insights said AI companies raised $103.3 billion in Q3, 55% of the global total, and 42 new AI unicorns were created, bringing the global AI unicorn count to 706. OpenAI raised $10 billion from SoftBank Vision Fund, and Databricks, Safe Superintelligence, Crusoe, Mistral and Moonshot AI followed among the largest deals.
July: European defence and deep tech set the pace
The quarter opened with a cluster of European defence and deep tech mega-rounds. On July 2-3, Munich-based Quantum Systems raised $1.2 billion at an $8 billion post-money valuation from Blackstone, Airbus and Advent International, Startuprad.io reported. On July 7-8, Proxima Fusion closed €411 million from Google and RWE, reaching unicorn status. Helsing followed on July 13-14 with a $1.8 billion round at an $18 billion valuation, backed by Dragoneer and Goldman Sachs Alternatives, making it Europe's most valuable defence-tech startup.
Biotech also saw large late-stage rounds in July. BioSpace reported that on July 14, Chai Discovery closed a $400 million Series C at a $3.8 billion valuation, with OpenAI participating. On July 16, AdvanCell raised $315 million in a Series D co-led by Ally Bridge Group and Alpha Wave.
September: AI, biotech and space keep the mega-deal pipeline going
In September, large rounds continued across biotech and space. On September 9, Encoded Therapeutics raised a $275 million Series F co-led by GV and an undisclosed healthcare fund, and Solstice Oncology launched with a $225 million Series A led by RA Capital Management. On September 23, Enveda collected $311 million in a Series E led by Catalio Capital Management, BioSpace reported.
The Seattle region set a record with $3.5 billion in venture funding in Q3, according to Puget Sound Business Journal, helped by Stoke Space's $1 billion Series E round in September. The Business Journals noted that the total was driven by major deals for a handful of startups.
Regional and sectoral divergence
Not every market followed the same pattern. Inc42 reported that Indian startups raised $2.2 billion in Q3, up 5% year over year, but late-stage funding declined 10% to $994 million while growth-stage funding rose 38%. South Korea's Q3 funding fell 29% from the prior quarter to $1.17 billion, according to Wowtale, but robotics surged: seven deals raised $403.7 million, up from $68.6 million across four deals in Q2, including Wonik Robotics' $241.4 million round.
CB Insights data shows the global market remains top-heavy. The average deal size in 2026 reached $49.8 million, up from $23 million in 2025, while the median rose only from $3 million to $3.4 million. Exits weakened: there were 2,353 M&A deals in Q3, down 9% from the previous quarter and the lowest since 2022, with 142 IPOs.
